Why SJBlackacre.com?

You may wonder why our domain name is SJBlackacre. The SJ represents Saint Joseph, Michigan, the location of our office. Blackacre is a term that is commonly used in law school to describe a fictitious parcel of real estate.

William Engeln

William "Bill" Engeln, J.D., Northwestern University School of Law, cum laude, 1980, is a Member of the firm whose practice includes transactional, contract, business, real estate, and estate planning law. Bill also attended the University of Chicago as a graduate student in political science, 1971-1973, and earned a B.A. in Political Science at Washington State University, summa cum laude, in 1970. He began his law practice with the Chicago law firms of Jenner & Block, 1980-1983, and Mayer, Brown & Platt, 1983-1986, in their corporate and commercial law departments. During the summer of 1970, Bill served as Congressional Intern to Congresswoman Catherine May (U.S. Representative from State of Washington) in Washintgon, D.C. He was admitted to practice law in Michigan in 1986 and is a Member of the Berrien County Bar Association. He has served the community in the following positions:

  • 1996-2002: Served on the Board of Directors of the Krasl Art Center (President, 2000-2002; Vice President, 1998-2000)
  • 1991-2002: Served on the Board of Directors of the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center (President, 2000-2002; Vice President, 1998-2000; Secretary, 1996-1998)
  • 1994-2002: Served on the Board of Directors of the Old St. Joseph Neighborhood Preservation Association (President, 1998-2002; Vice President, 1996-1998; Secretary, 1994-1996)
